Post of Christmas Past # 11 – A Christmas Spirit

Ah, Christmas spirits. Not those three ghosts that visit if you forget the true meaning of Christmas. No, these spirits are the alcoholic drinks we share with friends, family, and strangers during the celebrations of the holiday season. This is time of year that brings annual opportunities to take part in a festive spirit or two, or three, or maybe four, or…

By the way, I use the word spirits loosely to encompass all things drinky-drinky during December Yuletide. That also includes non-alcoholic spirits. Because you don’t need alcohol to enjoy the “spirit” of the moment. Good times being had at restaurants, pubs, bars, house parties, office parties, all over the place. Immersed in awesome atmospheres wrapped full of special cheer and merry wishes. Who’s round is it?

I’m someone who does drink. Not a lot, but I do take advantage of a the holidays to relax and savour a whiskey. I get that from my grandmother and my mom. They must have been passed down to me, lol. Good taste in fine whiskey is genetic. I have so many cherished memories of sitting around my grandmother’s kitchen during a good old Newfoundland kitchen party sharing stories with the rest of the family and friends while toating this is a wonderful life.

If there were tickable boxes for all things Christmas, stay…have a drink is definitely one of them. I’ve heard that myself countless amount of times. When I obliged, said sure, why not? I found myself experiencing some of my most special Christmasy moments. Time is paused, conversations had, and gifts exchanged surrounded in tinsel, baking smells, and mistletoe. The one gift-giving time of year when we can sit, clink glasses, and gift moments with the people we love to spend quality time with. While the rest of the world does the exact same thing.

Yup, a perfectly poured whiskey in my favourite glass as piano jazz plays in the background is my way of proving everything about Christmas is true. The ambiance of a snowy Christmas Eve sitting in the glow of tree lights while a fire cracks in the background can trigger and reinforce those decorated memories I have stored away for eleven months. It’s then I raise my glass to making it to the finish line. To a job well done. To another great successful Christmas in the bag. And, raised again to the people I love and care about who are safe and happy. Finally, a raise of my glass to you, my followers. Cheers to that all of that spirit.

Until…
