Earth To Ash Episode Fifty Eight – Caturday

Welcome back, join me and my continuing conversation about my thoughts, feelings, and emotions to the world around me.

In this episode, it’s a new year and new shades of Ash. Come along for a chat because having a fresh new year ahead of you makes anything possible. And, as always, I throw in a poem, no wait, two poems for good measure.

Enjoy!!

  1. Hey, another awesome episode in the books!! And a great start to the new year! And you’ve done it again – brought up something I was thinking about asking you about…well kinda…. I’ve been thinking about diet and exercise and whatnot, and, I know you once said you gave up giving advice, but I did want to ask you a couple basic things and wasn’t sure how to just bring it up…now it doesn’t seem so awkward! Lol…so I’ll get with you in an email, maybe this week, and when you get the chance just shower me with your wisdom…Thank you in advance….lol..and by the way, I love the idea of going for a walk while listening to Earth To Ash! But you know that means you need to be more regular in releasing your episodes?! Ah, who’m I kidding – I could listen to the same episode again and again..lol…

Aw, such a great memory of your grandmother. I’ve said it before, but what a wonderful soul she was (still is)…the exact definition of what they call Earth Angels, as she always seemed to give so much of herself in exchange for the comfort and happiness of her family and friends – would have been an honor to know her….and you, and how you turned out, are a huge testimony to the kind of person she was, because she definitely raised you right and instilled much of that same unconditional kindness in you 😊…

Yay! The Bike Writer is going to be awesome. I remember you wanted to bring that feature back last year, and so glad it’s going to work out this year… You know I can’t wait to see all those spectacular little places where you’ll go and learn more about NL and get to read all those new poems it’ll inspire… 🙂…. Maybe more of your native speak will come out… Loved hearing the uninhibited pronunciation of Harbour Breton and, of course, the slip of Mudder Nature! 😄

Aw, love that you guys took care of the little kitty!! My parents have had the same going on for about 5/6 years – had a stray show up, next thing she had kittens, then some of them wandered away or whatever, then came the next litter, and they hung around, etc. They feed them and give them toys, but have never been able to catch any…but they do their best to take care of them – even made a little house for them in the winter…

You’ve talked before about the Cod moratorium – thing is, even with having given people the opportunity to learn new skills, so many of these little towns and villages are so remote what else could they do but things in the fishing industry? Did a lot of people need to relocate to other areas, move to the city, etc?

Oh my gosh! I can imagine how you must’ve felt on that ice! I know exactly the sounds of the ice you’re talking about…. We had a big lake in the town I grew up in and it froze most winters, and I was always terrified to walk out on it…hence I never learned to ice skate! Lol… But I was the same as a kid – always cautious, always way wiser/older than my years compared to the other kids falling out of trees they climbed…lol…but at least you learned your lesson….I think what makes it worse, even in the moment, is you knew better than to cross the ice, especially at night, and you weren’t only afraid of the situation, but afraid if something did happen and your grandmother found out … Which was always what kept me from doing things I knew I shouldn’t – I couldn’t bear disappointing people… I’m kinda still that way…lol… Thank you for sharing that little memory! I knew as soon as I saw the haiku I had to hear the story behind it… So glad you didn’t turn into Captain Canada! 😊

Ha ha ha! So what kind of coffee did you get, the Irish kind? How many times do I have to tell you – recite poetry sober! Ha ha ha!! And there was no reason to be nervous reading Voyeur Moon – it’s fantastic. And like I said yesterday, can’t wait to read the other 4 you come up with!! 😍 They’ll be just as fabulous, I know it… Honestly, whether I go back years in EtA or if it’s anything you’ve written since I’ve known you, I don’t think I’ve ever read anything that made me sneer or grimace… I’ve loved everything you’ve composed – sure, some more than others, but I’ve never not liked something… And I know anything romance you write will be no different… 💕…

Thanks for taking me along on this first walk (and drive) of 2026…loved the lapping of the water, the crunching of the snow, the whirring of studded tires…lol… Already can’t wait til next time! ☺️

    1. Hey, I am glad you are thinking about getting some physical fitness in your day. I can try my best to share my wisdom, lol. Grandparents are Earth angels for sure. I miss her a lot. My accent has a way of creeping in from time to time, that time was obvious for sure. Yes, there’s no stopping Bike Writer now, glad you’re as excited as I am. As for the kitten, the trap is set, so hope it’s no time now before we get it the attention it needs. Stay tuned. For the moratorium, some went out west to Alberta for jobs, some went into different disciplines all together and some just waited for other opportunities in other fisheries. That night was a retelling of that alone feeling and the pinpoint of a time when I realized quicker is not always better…in this case, safer. Things we did as 80’s kids. No, not Irish, lol. And, as always, thank you for coming along for the listen. I appreciate your comments and support, love the feedback and your perspective. Let’s see what 2026 has in store. Appreciate you.
